This is not Antenatal Coverage, and the two will disagree
They answer different questions, and reading one as the other is the mistake this page exists to prevent.
A caesarean performed in August on a woman who booked in January is counted in January on Coverage and in August here. Both are right. Coverage follows a group of women forward through their pregnancies, which is the only way a completion figure like ANC4+ can mean anything; this page counts events as they happen, which is the only way a monthly return can.
So the two pages will report different numbers for the same month, permanently. Neither is a correction of the other, and neither should be quoted as the other.
If you need a rate, read Antenatal Coverage. There is deliberately no caesarean rate or stillbirth rate on this page. Coverage already publishes both, worked out over the women who booked; a second set worked out over the month’s events would be different numbers under the same names, and there would be no way to tell from a printout which you were holding. What this page gives you instead is the counts themselves, and a Share column beside the delivery breakdown whose total you can see on the same screen.
Choosing the period
The date picker at the top sets the range. Figures are added up across whole months, so a range that starts mid-month includes that whole month. The furthest back you can go is about twelve months.What you’re looking at

Every delivery in the range, split by how the baby was born, with a Share column worked out over the total of the rows.
Mode not recorded is a row on purpose. It is your outstanding paperwork, and hiding it would quietly shrink the denominator every other row is measured against. If it is large, the rest of the breakdown describes fewer births than you think.
When no deliveries were recorded in the range at all, the tab is empty rather than showing six zeroes — “nothing happened” and “none of them were caesareans” are different statements.
Summary — the monthly return
The five things to know before you transcribe these
Every one of these changes what a figure means on the form you are copying it onto.- A first antenatal contact is not a booking. A woman booked on 29 January whose first contact is on 2 February is a January booking and a February first contact. If your form asks for new bookings, that number is on Antenatal Coverage, not here.
- Twins count as two births and one delivery. Births counts babies; Deliveries counts labours. On a month with twins the two will not match, and that is correct.
- A baby born alive who later died is a birth, never a stillbirth. Early Neonatal Deaths is counted separately and is included in Births and in Live Births.
- Low Birth Weight Births counts every baby weighed, whatever the outcome — a stillborn baby of 1,800 g is included. Births Weighed sits beside it so you can see how many babies the figure describes. If your form asks for low birth weight among live births only, this is not that number.
- A delivery with no delivery time recorded is not counted at all. A record opened as a labour ends, before anyone has written down when the baby arrived, has no month to belong to. Fill in the time and it appears. See Record a delivery.
Exporting it
Export downloads the tab you are looking at as a spreadsheet, which is the point of the page — a monthly return exists to be transcribed. The file contains the same aggregate counts you can see: there is no patient name, no patient number and no row for any individual woman anywhere in it. HIV and PMTCT figures are not on this page and never will be, at any level of aggregation, including as a count. The PMTCT cascade is read on the PMTCT screen, on the chart of the woman it belongs to. A monthly count of one or two on an exported spreadsheet identifies a woman as surely as writing her name would. Skilled birth attendance is not reported. Every birth counted here was attended here, so a figure worked out from it would come to 100% whatever the hospital did.Why does August have a different caesarean count here from Antenatal Coverage?

Because Coverage counts a caesarean in the month the woman booked, and this page counts it in the month it was performed. Both are correct answers to different questions. Use this page for “what did we do in August”; use Coverage for “how did the women we booked in August fare”.

No. A record marked as entered in error is excluded here from the moment it is marked — the contact, the dose, the delivery or the birth. So are records belonging to a pregnancy record that was itself marked as entered in error. Nothing is deleted; see Retract a delivery or birth record.

No. The dose counts are IPTp, tetanus and iron-folate only. Doses recorded under any other programme are deliberately left out of this page, because it is exported.

Because the birth happened. A draft record that says when the baby arrived is counted straight away — waiting for the paperwork to be finished would leave August short of its caesareans for as long as theatre took to write them up. A draft with no delivery time is not counted, because there is no month to put it in.
