# Notifications

One master switch and a row of category switches decide what your practice hears about. The card says it plainly: "Choose which in-app and email notifications your clinic receives. Essential emails (receipts, security, and billing alerts) always send."

<Path steps={['Sidebar', 'Settings', 'Practice notifications', 'Notifications']} />

<TaskHeader before="Nothing — the switches save the moment you flip them" time="2 minutes" after="A practice inbox that carries only what your team acts on" />

## What this tab controls

Every switch saves on its own, straight away. There is no **Save** button.

| Control                       | What it does                                                                  | Default                            |
| ----------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------- |
| **Email notifications** | "Master switch for all clinic emails. Turn off to pause non-essential email." | On |
| **Appointment** | "New bookings, cancellations, and reminders" | On |

| **Billing** | "Payment received, invoices, and overdue alerts" | On |
| **Subscription** | "Plan changes, trial expiry, and payment status" | On |
| **Document** | "Document signed, viewed, or expired" | On |
| **Insurance** | "Claim status changes and approvals" | On |
| **System** | "System updates and maintenance notices" | On, **and cannot be switched off** |
| **Achievement emails** | "Milestone badges, tier-ups, and your clinic's trophy case" | On |
| **Daily operational digests** | "Morning owner summaries for inventory, pharmacy, and lab" | On |

The **System** switch is drawn but disabled, and the line under the card says why: "System notifications cannot be disabled as they contain important updates about your clinic." The category list also adapts to your edition, so you only see categories your practice can produce.

## Set it up

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Notifications">
    From the sidebar footer select **Settings**, then **Practice notifications** → **Notifications**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Decide on email as a whole">
    Leave **Email notifications** on unless you want to pause practice email entirely. Turning it off confirms with "All non-essential clinic emails are paused. Receipts, security, and billing alerts still send."
  </Step>

  <Step title="Mute the categories you don't act on">
    Flip any category switch off. You get "Notifications muted" and the name of what you turned off — for example "Appointment notifications turned off."
  </Step>

  <Step title="Deal with the two extras">
    **Achievement emails** and **Daily operational digests** sit below the categories, separated by a line. The digests are a morning summary for the owner; turn them off if nobody reads them.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## What changes once you save

There is no save — each switch takes effect as you flip it, and the confirmation toast tells you it landed.

| What you changed                  | What you'll notice                                                                                                                                                                                                  |
| --------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Email notifications** off | Non-essential practice email stops. **Transactional email keeps sending** — receipts, security alerts, password resets and billing alerts are never suppressed by this switch. In-app notifications are unaffected. |
| A category off | Both the in-app notice **and** the email for that category stop. The bell stops showing them, and nothing about that category reaches the practice inbox. |
| A category back on | Notifications resume from that moment. Nothing that was suppressed while it was off is delivered late. |
| **Achievement emails** off | Badge and tier-up emails stop. Your trophy case is still there to look at. |
| **Daily operational digests** off | The morning inventory, pharmacy and lab summary stops arriving. |

**This store governs email directed at the practice.** It is not the same thing as your own account settings, and it is not the same thing as what a client has asked for. If you are trying to stop a specific message, work out which store owns it first:

| Store | Where you set it | What it governs |
| ------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Email notifications** master switch | This tab | Practice-directed email, on or off, as a whole |
| The category switches | This tab | Practice email **and** in-app notices, per category |
| Your personal account settings | [Account notifications](/platform/account/notifications) | Email addressed to you as a person — account, security and marketing |
| The individual client's record | The client's intake sheet | That client's own appointment reminders and confirmations |

So a client complaining about reminders is fixed on their record, not here; an owner tired of milestone emails turns off **Achievement emails** here.

## Check it worked

Flip a switch and watch for the confirmation — "Notifications muted" or "Notifications enabled", naming the category. Reload the tab; the switch should hold its new position. Then trigger something in that category (book a test appointment, say) and confirm nothing arrives in the practice inbox and nothing appears under the bell.

## Common issues

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="The System switch will not move">
    It is deliberately fixed on. System notices carry service and maintenance information every practice needs, so there is no way to mute them.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="I turned everything off and email still arrives">
    Essential email is out of scope for these switches. Receipts, security alerts, password resets and billing alerts always send. If what you are getting is an appointment reminder to a *client*, that is set on the client's record, not here.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="A category I was told about isn't in my list">
    The list adapts to your edition and only offers categories your practice can produce. A missing switch means that category never fires for you.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title=""Failed to update preferences"">
    The switch snaps back to where it was and nothing was saved. Check your connection and flip it again.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="A colleague still gets emails I muted">
    Muting here stops practice-directed email. Email addressed to them as a person — account and security notices, marketing — is governed by their own [account notifications](/platform/account/notifications).
  </Accordion>
</AccordionGroup>

For how these preferences are honoured across the platform, see [Notification settings](/platform/settings/notifications).
