# Record a prescription pickup at the till

<Availability editions={['pharmacy']} plans="All plans" roles="Anyone whose role reaches POS sells; recording the pickup needs 'Dispense a prescription'" />

When you sell a prescription at the till, the pharmacy records the handover: who collected it, whether counselling was accepted or declined, your own questions, the privacy-notice acknowledgment when one is due, and a signature. You can record it straight after the sale, or leave it as **Collect later**.

<Path steps={['Sidebar', 'POS']} />

<TaskHeader before="A customer on the sale, and a line marked as a prescription" time="Under a minute" after="A pickup record with a signature, or a pickup waiting to be collected" />

## Mark prescription items

Items that are always sold on prescription can be marked once, so the till never forgets.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the item">
    Open the item in your inventory and edit it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Turn on Prescription item">
    Turn on **Prescription item** and save. The till then ticks and locks **This is a prescription** on that item's line, so selling it always leaves a pickup to record.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Nothing is marked to begin with. Until you mark an item, the till treats it as an over-the-counter sale unless the cashier ticks the line.

## Sell a prescription

<Steps>
  <Step title="Add the customer">
    A pickup belongs to a customer, so choose them on the sale. A sale with no customer leaves no pickup to record.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Tick the prescription lines">
    Each line in the cart has **This is a prescription**. It is ticked, and locked, for a **Prescription item**. Tick it yourself for any other line sold on a prescription.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Complete the sale">
    Take payment as usual. Once the sale is saved, the **Record pickup** sheet opens for the prescription lines.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Record the pickup, or leave it for later">
    Fill in the sheet as described in [Record a prescription pickup](/hospital/pharmacy/pickups): who is collecting, the counselling answer, your questions, the privacy notice when it's due, and the signature. Then select **Record pickup**. If the customer will collect later, select **Collect later** instead.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<AuditNote />

The sheet uses the clinical wording on its own labels, for example **The patient** and **Someone else for the patient**. It means the customer.

## Find a pickup that's waiting

A pickup left as **Collect later** stays listed until someone records it:

* on the **Sales** screen, under **Awaiting pickup**, with its code, the number of items and the date;
* on the customer's record, on the **Purchases** tab.

Select **Record** beside it to open the sheet. You can also scan the pickup code.

## Who can do this

| Action | Who by default | Permission |
| - | - | - |
| Tick **This is a prescription** and complete the sale | Anyone whose role reaches POS | — |
| Record the pickup | Owner, manager, and staff given the permission | **Dispense a prescription** |
| Mark an item as a **Prescription item** | Anyone who may edit inventory items | — |

A cashier without **Dispense a prescription** can still complete the sale. They see "Awaiting pickup — a pharmacist will record the handover." and the pickup waits on the **Sales** screen.

## Check it worked

After recording, the pickup no longer appears under **Awaiting pickup** on the **Sales** screen. After **Collect later**, it does.

## Common issues

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="The pickup sheet didn't open after the sale">
    Either no line was ticked **This is a prescription**, the sale had no customer, the sale was taken while the till was offline, or you don't have **Dispense a prescription**. An offline sale's pickup appears under **Awaiting pickup** once the till is back online and the sale has synced.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="I can't untick This is a prescription">
    The item is marked **Prescription item**, so the line is always a prescription. Change the item if that's wrong.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Record pickup stays greyed out">
    A required answer is missing: who is collecting, the counselling answer, a required question, the privacy acknowledgment when it's shown, or the signature.
  </Accordion>
</AccordionGroup>

## FAQ

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Is the customer messaged when I choose Collect later?">
    No. A sale taken at the till is not messaged, because the customer was there. A prescription dispensed from the Prescription List does message the patient, once, with their pickup code. See [Record a prescription pickup](/hospital/pharmacy/pickups).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Does a pickup work offline?">
    No. The sale itself works offline as usual; the pickup is recorded once you're back online.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can the customer sign on their own phone?">
    Yes, if your pharmacy allows signing links. See [Send it to the patient's phone](/hospital/pharmacy/pickups#send-it-to-the-patients-phone).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Where do I change the questions and the privacy notice?">
    Under [Settings → Pickups](/pharmacy/settings/pickups).
  </Accordion>
